Death end re;Quest Story

Arata Miznunashi, a video game programmer, receives a notification from an email sent to him by Shina Ninomiya, a colleague of his who went missing nearly one year ago. Together, they worked to create World's Odyssey (W.O.D), an immersive virtual landscape powered by breathtaking, state-of-the-art technology. That is, until Shina's sudden disappearance put a swift halt to production. Arata discovers the startling revelation that Shina Ninomiya was stuck inside of "W.O.D." the whole time. When Arata delves hurriedly back into the lines of codes haunting his forsaken project, he realises that his game is now ravaged by an infestation of bugs, and that Shina is its only active player.

Arata soon learns that a nefarious force prevents him from extracting Shina out of the game. Her only way out? She must complete the game to unlock the perfect ending - an outcome with a success rate of 1%. On their journey, they encounter a slower of NPC characters that blur perceptions of humanity and A.I.-technology, setting into a motion a thrilling narrative that calls into question the differences between the virtual world and ours.

Little do they know what horrors await them on both sides of the screen.

Mai Toyama seeks an escape from her traumatic past. She becomes enrolled at Wordsworth, an all-girl’s dormitory situated in the small, mountainous town known as Le Choara where it was rumored that her sister, Sanae, was last seen. Hopeful, Mai seeks to find her kin, but she soon finds terrifying inhabitants which lurk throughout the town after dark. At night, Le Choara’s streets are filled with Shadow Matter—a horrific group of menacing creatures. Around every cobblestone corner, Mai discovers that her hope of finding her sister lies beneath the long-buried secrets which haunt Le Choara.​

What is the Death end re;Quest series?

A thrilling RPG in which a group of young people traverse a world tainted by bugs, death threatening them at every turn as they confront mysteries and danger. It is packed with despair-inducing Death Ends written by Makoto Kedouin, acclaimed writer of Corpse Party.

The first installment of the Death end re;Quest series launched on PlayStation®4 in 2018 (Japan) and 2019 (NA/Europe), and its sequel, Death end re;Quest 2, was released on PlayStation®4 in 2020 (Japan/NA/Europe).

  • Beyond Belief: Fact or Fiction?

    Jump between reality and in-game modes, as players will need to investigate in real world view to solve the mysterious inner-workings of the World Odyssey, and switch to an in-game view mode to battle against glitched-out monsters. Choose options wisely, as your decision can change the game's ending!

  • Turn-Based RPGs Flipped Upside Down

    In this turn-based command battle system, you can roam freely and duke it out with the fearsome monsters. During battle, players can change the game's genre from a first-person shooter to even a fighting game!

  • Overkill Brings Huge Rewards

    The Overkill system is an added feature where characters can stack damage beyond the health of an enemy for bonus experience! Try to inflict as much damage to all the monsters for bigger rewards.

  • Beware of the Berserker

    During dungeon exploration and battle, a faceless, black figure will appear out of nowhere. The figure will also display an area of attack once it appears. Mai and her squad must step away from the Berserker’s area of attack, as it will instantly kill anyone with one single blow. Run away from the Berserker in the dungeon or defeat all the existing monsters in the battlefield to escape!​

  • Day n’ Night

    Mai will need to explore the town of Le Choara during the day and speak with the townspeople to find out clues as to where her sister is. By night, Mai will fight her way through dark creatures stylized in a turn-based RPG. Experience the story through the lens of a visual novel during the day and battle it out against horrific creatures by night!​​

  • Don’t Call it a Knockback

    The Knockback system is back in Death end re;Quest 2, but this time, Mai and her squad can smack Shadow Matter even harder! Combo your attacks by flinging monsters to other party members!​

No Strain No Gain

Delve deep into the deadly dungeons of the Strain Area, filled with randomly-generated monsters, traps, and more. Think carefully about your actions, because when you move, your enemies will get to take their turn as well. Explore every corner of a dungeon to find useful items, and try to make your way further and further down.

Blink and You're Dead

Every move you make may spell certain death in the form of dozens of violent Death Ends. You may even trigger a brutal Double Death End, featuring gruesome art by Kei Nanameda and overseen by the diabolically twisted Makoto Kodouin.

You Keep on Walking and You Don't Look Back

Your biggest challenge awaits at the bottom of each dungeon. Get ready to test your limits as you must fight a powerful boss. Once the boss is defeated, it's time to save your friend and try to make it out of the Strain Area alive, your new companion in tow.

Between trips to the Strain Area, make sure to take a break at home where you can stock up on invaluable items, head to the Night Owl Café to enhance your weapons, or check in on friends around town.
